Videos are Extremely Popular

Smartphones and feature phones are equipped with video capture and video players. You can capture videos and share with your family and friends by uploading them to YouTube, Facebook, and other websites. In 2007, there were 22 billion views logged for UGC, up 70 percent from 2006. And, this rate continues to grow aggressively.

Why Most Videos for Mobile Users are Poor Quality?

Users want clear, sharp images with vivid colors. Unfortunately, this is not the case for the majority of the time.

Video quality is compromised because:

  • manufacturers want to minimize costs for the CCD senor, encoder, FLASH memory storage while also allowing for longer usage between battery charge
  • wireless service providers want to minimize spectrum usage and allow more billable customers by increasing the video encoding rate
  • LCD displays have inherent color fading and motion blur
  • Mobile Users do not carry professional lighting equipment to adjust for darkness, strong direct light, and electrical lighting (incandescent light bulbs) that distorts natural colors
  • All these factors contribute to subpar videos and a poor quality viewing experience. Just look at the quality of the most popular websites and you can witness these effects.

Traditional solutions for HDTVs, Professional Camcorders, and PCs are not acceptable for mobile consumers. Hardware and software applications exist in high end video systems that can eliminate the above distortions to a degree. However, several drawbacks are observed:

    • They are not cost-effective. HDTV’s have semiconductor chips containing many millions of gates or an array of DSP’s, making them too expensive and too inflexible for mobile applications.
    • It takes too long, a few seconds, for most software applications to enhance one photo on the PC (i.e. Adobe Photoshop) without any guarantee of results. These products typically use static algorithms, making them scene, format, and application dependent, and in some situations, require manual intervention from an experienced user. A mobile device must be able to play both high quality broadcast videos and very low quality user generated content (UGC) in many different formats from MPEG-2 to H.264 and from 15 to 30 frames per second. It would not be acceptable for videos.
